Have you always had a passion for photography? Or even anything artistic or colourful? It's easy to say you "photograph" things all the time, but when you start to just point and shoot and turn your camera off without another glance at the picture, it can become just another form of "something we have to do"... another milestone recorded, another sunset captured, another birthday saved away in our little cameras - never to see the light of day or be printed? It's funny how digital cameras have taught us that we can click away recklessly if we choose to, but at the same time it's taken the LOVE of what we do away... it's made us think that with our reckless snapping, and the ease of just storing our photos on a computer or memory stick, that we can forget about them til "another day". But that day never seems to come. Our memory cards get full to the point of bursting and still we dont walk down to the shop or email off our shots for printing.

Gone is also the suspense of waiting for your roll of film to be developed. Capturing that photo, waiting excitedly til you finish the roll so you can deliver it to your trusted developers... going to pick it up the next day and check out what you managed to capture in that photo. Im not knocking the great technology that allows us to see what we've taken straight away on our screens, Im just saying it seems to have taken a bit of that "suspense and mystery" out of the art of photography. Once again, we've managed to succumb to the art of convenience instead.

I wonder... if we were to turn our digital cameras off and take a roll of film out for the day, take photos of things that we ACTUALLY want and have to pay money to see the results of... will we start to enjoy it more than ever?

I cant really answer that myself, I am a professional photographer who is still as passionate about photography as ever, even with my convenient digital Canon... but it is something to mull over! I never did swap my trusted SLR film camera over for a digital one until about 2 years ago (sure I had a little digital but my main camera was still a film camera), and I have enjoyed learning everything over - it's almost made it like a NEW skill to photography. Im loving it. But I do hope we dont lose magic of film forever too. To see my gallery of my digital shots go to http://www.firstmemoriesportraits.com.au
